80/20: Air Fryer Char Siu

Cooking doesn’t need to be hard or complicated. Often, you’re simply looking for a recipe that gets you most of the way there with minimal effort, hence 80/20 — the idea is to get 80% of the results with 20% of the effort!

So here’s a 25m Cantonese Char Siu recipe that saves on time and effort using an air fryer and store-bought Char Siu marinade.

  • Place pork chunks into a mixing bowl, and incorporate ginger, garlic, char siu sauce, five spice powder, white pepper powder, and soy sauce.
    • 1.50 lb pork, butt or shoulder, cut into 4 equal chunks (675 g)
    • 1 inch ginger, sliced (20 g)
    • 2 clove garlic, minced (6 g)
    • 4 tbsp char siu sauce (84 g)
      (Lee Kum Kee brand)
    • 1 tbsp five spice powder (10 g)
    • 1 tsp white pepper powder (2 g)
    • 1 tbsp light soy sauce (15 g)
      (optional)
  • Let pork marinate for at least a few hours. For best results, marinate overnight.
    • Preheat oven to 400F
      • Place pork into the oven and cook for 15m.
        • Check in every 2-3m to flip the pork and baste with honey.
          • 1 tbsp honey (21 g)
            (just enough to glaze)
        • To serve, slice pork into slices and serve over rice and with vegetables like bok choy or Chinese broccoli (gai lan).
